Meltemi Winds

What to Know About the Meltemi Winds

The Meltemi winds are strong, dry northerly winds that affect the Aegean Seaduring the summer charter season. In Turkey they are known as Meltem, while in Greece they are referred to as the Etesian winds.

These winds typically begin in mid-May and continue through September, occasionally extending into October. Meltemi winds usually build from late morning, strengthen during the afternoon, and ease again in the evening or overnight.

Because of this daily pattern, yacht charters often plan cruising time for early mornings, when sea conditions are calmer. In stronger periods, captains may avoid sailing altogether, as Meltemi winds can reach 7–8 Beaufort and occasionally higher.

How the Meltemi Affects Yacht Cruises

In the Aegean, Meltemi winds generally blow from the northeast in the northern regions and move southward across open sea corridors. Certain routes, particularly between Bodrum, the Dodecanese Islands, and the Cyclades, are more exposed to uninterrupted wind flow.

During sustained Meltemi conditions, waves can build quickly.
In strong winds, sea states may become unsuitable for comfortable cruising, especially for smaller or less protected charter yachts.

For this reason, experienced captains monitor conditions closely and may delay departures or adjust routes to maintain guest comfort and safety.

Points to Keep in Mind During Meltemi Season

  • Meltemi winds bring low humidity, clear skies, and excellent visibility.
  • They offer relief from summer heat, especially in July and August.
  • Conditions can be ideal for sailing enthusiasts and windsurfing.
  • Swimming and snorkeling may be less comfortable in exposed areas.
  • In regions such as the Cyclades, the northeastern coasts are more affected.

While Meltemi winds are appreciated by experienced sailors, they are less favorable for guests seeking calm and relaxed cruising days.

Planning Around the Meltemi Winds

Meltemi winds can persist for several days at a time and are not always predictable.
Although conditions often ease overnight, there is no guarantee of calm periods during a given charter week.

On crewed yacht charters, captains are experienced in managing these conditions. However, they generally prefer not to sail during strong Meltemi periods in order to avoid discomfort for guests.

When planning a yacht charter holiday in the Aegean, it is always advisable to discuss seasonal wind patterns with your charter advisor.
This allows routes and expectations to be adjusted realistically.
