Istanbul Gulet: A Journey Through Time
From Cargo to Luxury
After years of serving as a commercial cargo vessel from 1971 to 1989, Istanbul underwent a transformation. When she was brought ashore for routine maintenance in 1989, an extensive renovation process began. The modifications turned her into an elegant gulet, designed for touristic sea journeys. With these changes, she returned to the blue waters, offering unforgettable experiences to countless guests each summer.
A New Beginning
Today, Istanbul once again glides through the crystal waters of the Mediterranean, embracing a new chapter in her life. Her hull, woodwork, mechanical components, engine, and generator have all been renewed. Despite these updates, she retains the essence of her original design. Thanks to this meticulous restoration, she remains a prominent figure in the commercial gulet sector.
The Vision Behind the Revival
This remarkable transformation, spanning more than half a century, was made possible by the dedication of Mr. Ali Torun and Mr. Mehmet Akın. Their shared vision led them to acquire the boat in 1980. With unwavering passion, they ensured her preservation for many years, safeguarding her history and character.
Continuing the Legacy
Following Mr. Akın’s passing in 2005, the partnership came to an end, but Istanbul’s journey did not. She continues to sail with a refreshed identity, honoring both the memory of their friendship and the rich history they nurtured. Each voyage keeps her legacy alive, allowing future generations to experience her timeless charm on the open seas.
